Workshop in Berlin, May 2015

Focusing back on the Causes and Consequences of the Financial Crisis

The workshop organised by the Berlin School of Economics and Law (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin) took place in Berlin on 07-08 May 2015 and focused on the developments made in the framework of Work Package 3 on the Causes and Consequences of the Financial Crisis. Not only has it raised the interest of FESSUD members; the workshop has also attracted many researchers and students who actively participated in the debates mentioned below.

The first versions of the syntheses of the country studies and the sectoral and market studies were presented and discussed in this occasion. Additionally, the Spanish partner of FESSUD – Universidad del Pais Vasco EHU UPV – introduced their findings on the effect of financialisation and the financial and economic crisis on the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Two presentations were given about financialisation and the financial and economic crisis in Japan and in Iceland. Besides,The Demise of Finance-Dominated Capitalism – Explaining the Financial and Economic Crises”, book stemming from WP3, was presented by Eckhard Hein and commented on by Malcolm Sawyer, coordinator of the project.

Finally, concerning the overall synthesis of WP3 given on this occasion, the aim of which aim is to identify “a financial structure that is most favourable for engendering sustainable economic growth with high levels of employment and good work for the citizens and under which the EMU as a whole will be less prone to financial and economic crisis”, first ideas stemming from the other deliverables were presented and debated lively.
