The Financialization of Capitalism in Portugal

FESSUD researchers Ana Cordeiro Santos, and Nuno Teles, together with CES researcher João Rodrigues, are publishing the, book entitled ‘A Financeirização do Capitalismo em Portugal’ [‘The Financialisation of Capitalism in Portugal’].

This book, written in Portuguese, offers an analysis of financialisation and its consequences in Portugal. Building on research carried out for the FESSUD project, it shows that what was perceived as the benign modernization of the domestic financial sector resulted, in fact, in the creation of favourable conditions for the growing power of finance in a number of systems of provision (housing, water, pensions) with deleterious effects on households. Being part of broader and systemic international process, the specificities of the Portuguese case are highlighted, giving particular attention to the role of the European Monetary Union as the major force behind financialisation in this country.
